The recording’s repertoire takes us back to the recent history of the Royal Danish Orchestra, the oldest symphony orchestra in the world. Dating back to 1448, it initially consisted solely of brass players and a timpanist. In this tradition, the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra under Henrik Vagn Christensen presents Royal Danish Concertos for Brass: three concertos by Thorvald Hansen (1847-1915), considered the finest trumpeter of his time and principal trumpeter of the Royal Danish Orchestra for many years. These are followed by three works by Mogens Andresen (*1945), former bass trombonist with the Royal Danish Orchestra. The final piece is an arrangement of a flute sonata by Morten Raehs (1702-1766) in the style of Maurice André. The outstanding soloists Ketil Christensen and Lars Ole Schmidt on trumpet; Bettina Ejlerts and Jakob Ferlev Ringsmose on trombone; Mattias Johansson on tuba; and Erik Sandberg on horn bring the works to life. A royal treat!
