Many works by Käfer have been lost, making it difficult to take a comprehensive look at his oeuvre. Nevertheless, the Christmas CD of the Ensemble La Protezione della Musica offers a brief overview of his surviving music. The Cantata for Epiphany “The people who walk in darkness” and two Cantatas for Christmas Day, “The Lord has made known his salvation” and “Today a Saviour is born to you” are combinend with instrumental works. Among those, there is an Aria ex C for keyboard, the only evidence of music for keyboard instruments by Käfer, which has been preserved in the private manuscripts of the lawyer Georg Michael Oster. Due to the mostly improvisatory practice of organists, no further organ music has survived. The recording took place in Grasberg in order to be able to use the baroque Schnitger-Organ as continuo instrument, dating from 1694.
